The Technische Betriebe in Wil (TBW) offer their customers beside electricity, gas and water also communications services such as internet access and telephony services. In order to meet the increasing requirements on functionality, reliability and availability of telephony services, a replacement of the existing solution had become necessary. A further goal was a significant reduction of production costs.
TBW evaluated different options including make or buy alternatives and decided finally for a solution from Aarenet. TBW has chosen the Purchase/Service model from Aarenet where the customer buys the system and Aarenet is operating the core system for the customer.
The Aarenet carrier system has been deployed in geo-redundant setup in TBW own datacenters in Wil. The system is connected via redundant SIP-trunks and dedicated high-speed IP-connections to the carrier-interconnection points to ensure a failure-free telephony operation.
The installation and integration of the system into the existing customer management and billing systems has taken place in the first months of 2016. After extensive testing all the existing customers were migrated to the new system.
In addition to standard voice services, a branded app for IOS and Android smartphones enable customers of TBW to take their fixed voice extension mobile on their smartphone. This solution improves the reachability of customers and can reduce (roaming) charges of the mobile operator significantly as customers can now use their fixed line telephone anytime and anywhere.
Stefan Huber, Head of Telecom TBW comments: „The migration of our existing customer base of more than 8'000 customers was completed without any downtime thanks to the excellent project management and the close cooperation with the Aarenet implementation team. For the system’s operation and support we rely on the support from Aarenet to ensure a flawless operation. In the past, we have been reselling voice services and now decided to operate with our own carrier switch. This meant that we had to learn many new processes and services and in coordinating this with Aarenet and the further involved partner we mastered this without significant issues in the set timeframe."
The project is a great example showing that deploying and using your own telephony system is worthwhile. The additional services offered by the system, as well as the individual design and deployment of the functionality are major advantages compared to the use and resale of commercially available solutions. Aarenet offers flexible, scalable systems that allow the connection of several thousands to hundreds of thousands of customers. The integration into existing customer management and billing systems has been realized cost-optimized thanks to open interfaces.
